Title: Piri Performer, Korean Music Educator, Ethnomusicologist
Affiliation: University of Michigan
Location: Ann Arbor, MI, USA
Bio
As a p'iri musician by training, Sunhong Kim is both a researcher and performer of Korean music, broadly defined. She received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Music from Ewha W. University. She was awarded second place in the National music competition hosted by the National Gugak Center. Through a praxis that integrates music theory, performance, and technology, Kim explores innovative ways to play the p'iri beyond its traditional sound. In her pursuit of a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology at the University of Michigan, her research centers on how discipline, canon, and the currents of listening and sounding in Korean music are shaped by, and continue to reshape, social realities--particularly through ensemble playing.
