Despite early feelings of displacement and limited acceptance from some culturally Korean communities, formative relationships with Korean women, and profound encounters with Korean dance helped her build a sense of belonging. Her commitment to learning traditional dance and drumming led her to study with multiple teachers in Korea and the U.S., eventually taking leadership of the JangmiArts troupe to support adoptees and Korean American youth. She emphasizes creating safe, affirming spaces—especially for adoptees and LGBTQIA+ students—while fostering future teachers who can connect deeply with Korean culture.

Sebastian Wang, a Korean-Chinese American percussionist, describes how Korean music—especially samulnori—deeply shaped his cultural identity and career, beginning with a childhood encounter at a Korean film festival and later intensive training in Korea that led him to become the first American to graduate from K-Arts’ samulnori program. Despite challenges accessing resources, proving his qualifications in the U.S., and building ensembles with enough members, he established the Korean percussion ensemble at the University of Maryland and later founded Washington Samulnori. He emphasizes the importance of mentorship, networking, and collaboration among gugak musicians, both in the U.S. and abroad, and hopes to raise the professional visibility of samulnori so audiences worldwide can recognize high-quality Korean drumming.

왕 세바스찬은 한국계 중국계 미국인으로서 한국 음악을 통해 한국 문화와 정체성에 깊이 연결되었고, 어린 시절 사물놀이 공연을 본 경험을 계기로 한국에서 본격적으로 연희를 공부해 한예종을 졸업했다. 이후 미국으로 돌아와 메릴랜드대학교 한국 타악 앙상블을 창단하고 워싱턴 사물놀이를 설립하면서 한국 전통 타악의 전문성과 인지도를 높이기 위해 활동해 왔다. 그는 자원 부족, 인맥 형성, 자신의 배경 때문에 겪은 편견 등 여러 어려움을 언급하며, 해외에서 활동하려는 국악인들에게는 명확한 비전, 탄탄한 네트워크, 협업의 중요성을 강조한다. 궁극적으로 사물놀이가 세계적으로 한국 음악의 대표 장르로 인식되고, 전문적인 수준으로 자리 잡기를 목표로 하고 있다.

Suwan Choi began his musical journey in high school, training in pungmul under mentors who encouraged diverse experiences, from busking to orchestral study. He joined the performance group Nanjang & Pan, gaining international exposure that sparked his interest in studying abroad. He studied at Northern Illinois University with a scholarship and now serves as Artistic Director at the Korean Performing Arts Institute of Chicago (KPAC), where he manages performances, navigates variable conditions, and oversees logistics.

최수완은 고등학교 시절 풍물, 산조, 관현악 등 다양한 경험을 쌓으며 자신의 음악적 기반을 넓혔고, 이후 난장앤판 활동을 통해 해외 공연을 다니면서 유학의 꿈을 키웠다. 호주 유학을 준비하던 중 우연히 시카고한국전통예술원을 알게 되어 미국에 오게 되었는데 영어 공부와 공연 활동을 병행하던 중 NIU(노던일리노이대학교)에서 열린 World Music Symposium에서 영감을 받아 2018년에 석사과정에 입학했다. 유학생활에서는 언어 장벽과 소통 방식의 차이로 어려움이 많았지만, 졸업 후 꾸준한 노력과 자신의 강점을 활용해 NIU와의 연결을 넓혀나갔다. 현재 시카고한국전통예술원 예술감독으로 활동하며 공연 기획과 연주 및 현장 운영 등 다양한 업무를 맡고 있다. 미국의 공연시장이 가진 성격과 전문 연주자로서 마이너 예술 시장에서 겪는 현실적 난관도 솔직히 털어놓았다.

Soojin Lee reflects on her journey from Korea to the United States, where her academic path evolved from gayageum performance to ethnomusicology and eventually to music education, influenced both by her professors’ guidance and her family circumstances. After moving several times for her husband’s career and raising a child, she completed a doctorate in music education and ultimately built her professional life in Minnesota rather than returning to Korea. She now works as a resident artist at the MacPhail Center for Music, teaches gayageum and Korean music to thousands of students through school partnerships, and performs and collaborates across diverse musical genres.

이수진은 2004년 결혼과 함께 미국에 건너와 인류음악학과 음악교육을 공부하며 경력을 쌓았고, 가족과의 생활 기반이 미국 미네소타에 정착되면서 현지에서 음악 교육자이자 가야금 연주자로 활동하게 되었다. 국악 전공자로서 음악교육 박사를 선택한 배경에는 한국 음악 교육 현장에서 국악 전공자의 부재를 느낀 경험이 있었으며, 박사 후에는 미네소타의 비영리 음악교육 기관인 맥페일(MacPhail Center for Music)에서 가르침, 학교 레지던시, 지역사회 프로그램 참여 등 다양한 역할을 수행하고 있다. 또한 장미아트(Jangmi Arts)와의 협업, 지역 그랜트 수혜, 여러 문화권 음악가들과의 협연을 통해 가야금 레퍼토리 확장과 지역사회 음악 접근성 향상에 기여하고 있으며, 앞으로는 미네소타 남동부 지역을 기반으로 한국 전통음악을 알리고 청소년 교육을 확대할 수 있는 커뮤니티 단체 설립도 꿈꾸고 있다.

Kim Sunhong, a PhD candidate in ethnomusicology at the University of Michigan, began her journey as a traditional Korean piri performer but shifted toward research after engaging with the Eunyul Talchum community, where she witnessed music functioning as a source of identity and continuity for North Korean refugee descendants. These encounters broadened her understanding of “Korean identity” and sparked her interest in the social lives of music, ultimately leading her to pursue graduate studies in the U.S.
