Title: Traditional Percussion Performance Artist
Affiliation: KPAC
Location: Chicago, IL, USA
Bio
Yun Sil Jang majored in Korean traditional percussion performance at Seoul Institute of the Arts and, deeply influenced by her teacher’s words, “A percussionist should be able to dance and sing,” expanded her practice to include Korean dance and vocal music, shaping her view of gamuak as a single, continuous flow.
Since joining KPAC in 2017, she has been active in performances across the United States and has served as a director for KPAC’s annual and project-based performances, advancing as both a performer and a creative director.
Recognizing the importance of education, she earned a nationally certified childcare teacher qualification from Korea’s Ministry of Health and Welfare in 2022.
She integrates child studies with Korean traditional music to help young children experience Korean music as natural and familiar.
Through Korean traditional arts, she seeks to share warmth among people, reflecting Korean music’s origins as a communal art meant to be shared.
